Having sold a little Mazda Bongo to the scrap man a couple of years ago, the frustration at not having an quick escape from this city has grown and grown. After watching endless van videos, making and reversing countless decisions of what sort of van to get, I’ve bought a cheap and cheerful Fiat Doblo – the MPV version with five seats. I figured give the weekend camping trips a go, and if I’m still feeling it, something a little bigger. I don’t need much, I know this from backpacking for a whole year where I learned some harsh lessons on what I need and what is dead weight. If I can backpack the globe, I can handle trips in a small van with minimal shit.
Having had two similar sized vans in the past, first a self built Mercedes Vito, followed by the aforementioned Bongo, this will be a more minimal setup. I’ve built rudimentary frame in the large boot at the back, that can extend over the rear row of seats to make a 180cm bed. All someone of my below average height needs. I’ll one of those fancy new power stations, I don’t want gas in the van, just add a little multipurpose cooker, a kettle and maybe a low powered cool box.
